I am sad that I was unable to see either you or the children again before my death. But there is nothing that can be done about it. I must accept this. My dear Doll, my last moments are entirely devoted to you and the children. I ask your forgiveness for having left you without any support and protection in life. Still, in these last moments, I implore you once more to pardon me and not to bear a grudge against me for this. You know very well that I was unable to act otherwise. And I implore you to devote a good thought to me from time to time. You will explain to the children, when they are of age, why I had to die, so that they may understand.
